Why Universal Design Day?
Every spring, the Inclusive Creation team rolls up our sleeves and begins the heavy lifting to ensure that our Universal Design Day celebration will be one of this year's highlights.
You may ask yourself why we put so much effort into a one-day celebration, and in this post we'd like to tell you exactly why this has been one of our top priorities since 2021.
Firstly, most of the team has had at least a 5-year run in higher education and academia. But only publishing or talking about Universal Design within the academic sphere is limiting. The speakers at UD Day don't have to be peer-reviewed to showcase the wonderful projects or initiatives they have been working on. Sometimes the industry is a lot more progressive than academia. For example, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation applies universal design in all of their operations, and in doing so, have developed a world-leading streaming service that enables everyone to enjoy its programming. Which is why we wanted to ensure that UD Day gives the non-academics a voice, and so that we can learn from each other no matter our backgrounds.
Secondly, we want everyone to join UD Day, no matter their knowledge or experience with UD. You don't have to be an UD expert to join our celebration, cause you're all invited to participate. We'll make sure that our speakers convey why UD is important in all the different parts and fields of the world and society in a simple manner so that you don't need any prerequisites when joining. Remember, this is a day for competency awareness, and sharing of knowledge. You don't need to come prepared.
For those of you who join UD Day and know a lot about it, we recommend you to connect with other participants, and start the conversation so that we can get more players on the UD Team. Maybe you'll find your next collaborator at our annual celebration – who knows?
Lastly, we are always working to ensure that you can join our celebration no matter your financial situation or placement in the world. This is why UD Day is free for everyone to attend. Our goal is to ensure that you can join the day without having to worry about the cost of the event.
This year your free ticket is thanks to the support from the Norwegian Research Council, DOGA's support, the partnership we have with the Norwegian Labour and Welfare Department, in addition to the private donations!
If you have a company or organization that would like to join forces for our next run of UD Day in 2024! We are always open for new collaborations. Reach out if you wish to join the force to create the next UD Day in 2024!
But before that! We wish you had a happy UD Day 2023!
We’re looking forward to seeing you either on-site at DOGA, or online on zoom.
